We now know: Between childhood and adulthood the brain?s ?wiring diagram ? becomes more complex and more efficient, especially in the brain?s prefrontal cortex. The greatest changes to the parts of the brain that are responsible for impulse-control, judgement, decision-making, planning, organization and involved in other functions like emotion, occur in adolescence. This area of the brain (prefrontal cortex) does not reach full maturity until around age 25!

Chinese scientists claim to have cracked the secret behind the age-old question of why the woodpecker seems to be headache-proof. Woodpeckers are born with the ability to hammer tree trunks approximately 12000 times a day on average, but sustain no head injuries in the process. A combination of factors is at play to protect the bird from head injury, from the anatomy within its skull and neck to the uneven lengths of its upper and lower beak. CT scan images of the woodpecker's head have revealed the bird's long tongue splits into two beneath the skull. Then, it wraps around the back of its head to restrain it like seatbelts in a car. Moreover, an uneven distribution of plate-like spongy bones on the woodpecker's skull also helps to absorb stress. Scientists hope the findings could be applied to the design of better safety equipments for humans.

In feed lots across the country, beef cattle are given growth hormones to make them fatter faster, to save money. Now questions are being raised about one of the most widely-used hormones, Zeranol, a synthetic estrogen implanted in cattle. A series of tests done for the Pentagon show a possible link between breast cancer and Zeranol.On March 30th, 2011 Discovery News reported, "Food Packaging Harbors Harmful Chemicals" Plastic wrappers, food cans and storage tubs deposit at least two potentially harmful chemicals into our food, confirmed a new study. By cutting out containers, people can dramatically reduce their exposures to these toxins. This video is going to teach you a series of stretches and exercises to do while still in bed before that first painful step in the morning. What you will need is a belt or towel next to your bed. Starting the first of three exercises, sit up with your legs straight out in front of you. point and flex your toes to get the muscles warmed up. Slowly point your toes as far down as you can, then flex them back up, warming up the muscles and soft tissues for the next exercise. Repeat 10 times. The next exercise is the belt stretch which can be performed with either a belt, scarf or towel. Sitting with your feet out in front of you, wrap the belt around the ball of one foot, grabbing the belt with one hand on each side of your leg. Sit up as straight as possible and use your arm strength to pull the ball of the foot into a flexed position without using your foot strength to do so. Hold for 20-30 seconds and repeat on the other side. Make sure that the towel or belt is wrapped around the ball of the foot and not just the toes, this will ensure a better stretch for the plantar fascia ligament.After you have performed the point and flex warm up and the belt stretch, massage the plantar fascia ligament. Massaging the plantar fascia ligament across the width of the plantar fascia. Starting at the inner side of the arch, massage across the width to the outside of the arch, with a light amount of pressure to ease your ligament to be prepared for your body weight when you get out of bed. The micro tears in the plantar fascia cause inflammation and pain. Due to these micro tears the ligament tightens up during the night and with your first step, causes pain. By massaging and stretching you can prevent re-injury to the plantar fascia ligament each morning along with reducing your pain. A night splint is also recommended for treatment of morning pain.

VICTORIA - There's a free house on Shelbourne Street in Victoria. The house is owned by Greater Victoria Jehovah's Witness community who purchased the house and land during the build of the Island's largest Kingdom Hall which is right next door. The previous owners were worried the year-long construction of the Kingdom Hall would be disruptive. The new hall will host seven congregations. It is expected to be finished by next month. A volunteer, faith-based workforce was largely responsible for raising the building. Had the build been contracted out the price tag would have been about 5.6 million dollars, thanks to the volunteers it came to half that.The free house is about 1200 square feet with three small bedrooms. It was built in the 1920s and extra rooms were added in the 1940s. The home is free but potential owners will have to relocate it and assume liability for the move. Researchers in a new study of the Adanson's Jumping Spider confirmed that the arachnid has an unusual form of depth perceptionâit can see in 3-D! These critters, like all jumping spiders, have eight eyes, the largest two having the best vision. Scientists noticed that the retina of these eyes have not one, but four distinct layers of light gathering cells, each creating a image more blurry than the layer below. Instead of this resulting in fuzzy spider myopia, the insect's rudimentary brain combines the varying images from most sharp to most out of focus and enables the spider to gauge the distance of objects, like a nice juicy fruit fly. Think of it like the blue and red lines you've seen in 3-D art, which combine with the help of glasses. Those of you suffering from arachnophobia ... be even more afraid.

The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

The Babylonian roots of Roman Catholicism. Ancient pagan societies who ruled by the priestcraft of magic and sorcery had many pagan gods, but goddess worship such as ISIS in Egypt and DIANA of Greece was definitely one of their key goddesses, which later worked its way into the cult of Mary in Rome. The worship of Mary was never taught by the apostles of Christ, yet Roman Catholicism teaches this pagan idolatry. "The central fallacy of Mariolatry (also spelled Maryolatry) is that it assigns to Mary an unscriptural role of mediator between God and man. Within Catholicism, the 'Blessed Mother' is just one of many such go-betweens. However, the scriptures couldn't be any clearer on the subject of mediators between God and men. The apostle Paul exhorts the believers: 'For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;' (I Tim. 2:5); 'he is the mediator of the new testament.' (Heb. 9:15). 'Jesus the mediator of the new covenant,' (Heb. 12:24); 'by himself purged our sins' (Heb. 1:3). Jesus Christ himself said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' (John 14:6). Nowhere in the scriptures is there a single example of the disciples or the apostles praying to Mary or any other deceased saint. Jesus said, I am the door of the sheep. And, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. (John 10:1,7). (It is interesting to note that the text of the NAB, the official Bible of the Catholic church, acknowledges these facts, while the teachings of the Catholic church contradict its own Bible

In 1535, Tyndale was arrested and jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year. He was tried for heresy, choked, impaled and burnt on a stake in 1536. The Tyndale Bible, as it was known, continued to play a key role in spreading Reformation ideas across the English-speaking world. The fifty-four independent scholars who created the King James Version of the bible in 1611 drew significantly on Tyndale's translations. One estimation suggests the New Testament in the King James Version is 83% Tyndale's, and the Old Testament 76%. (Source: Wikipedia)

After installing a 325 litre aquarium im my living room I received approx 25 pcs. of Garra Rufa (Doctorfish or Kangal Fish) by courier service from Avifauna in KrusĂĽ, Denmark. This video shows how they nibble at the dead skin on my hands. This video was taken on the second day I had the fish, I still have to figure out the optimal feeding, temperature surroundings etc. I have tried this treatment at a professional clinic, where the fish seemed more eager to nibble. Firelight Media Group provided the sound design and mix. Russ Dube, Principal at Wowhouse, was looking for a way to present 4 of the 12 animations on the company's medical website. Byron Campbell, Principal at Firelight Media Group and Russ discussed what they could do to enhance the animations. Byron and Nick DeBeauvernet, the sound designer on the project from Firelight Media Group, worked together on the first animation to get the right feel. Once the feel was established Nick incorporated the sound design elements and mixed for the final animations. En una conferencia sobre las vĂctimas no judĂas de los nazis, el doctor Gordon Zahn, de la universidad de Massachusetts, dividiĂł a las vĂctimas de los nazis en tres categorĂas: 1) los que sufrieron por lo que eran: judĂos, eslavos, gitanos; 2) los que sufrieron por lo que hicieron: homosexuales, activistas polĂticos y otros opositores al rĂŠgimen; 3) los que sufrieron por lo que rehusaron hacer: objetores de conciencia, testigos de JehovĂĄ y otros.
Millones de judĂos sufrieron y murieron simplemente porque eran de raza judĂa. Para los partidarios de Hitler, poco importaba que fueran ortodoxos o ateos, todos fueron condenados a la "soluciĂłn final", o exterminio, como se llamaba el mĂŠtodo que utilizaba Hitler para librar a Europa de los judĂos. De igual manera, los eslavos âpara la cruzada de Hitler, principalmente los polacos, rusos y ucraniosâ fueron condenados tan solo por ser eslavos, 'una raza inferior' en comparaciĂłn con la estirpe "suprema" aria.
Sin embargo, el caso de los testigos de JehovĂĄ europeos era distinto. ProvenĂan de muchas nacionalidades, pero se les considerĂł errĂłneamente una amenaza pacifista al rĂŠgimen nacionalsocialista alemĂĄn debido a que adoptaban la posiciĂłn cristiana de neutralidad y rehusaban incorporarse al esfuerzo bĂŠlico de cualquier naciĂłn. BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (Reuters) - A powerful 8.6 magnitude earthquake and strong aftershocks struck off Indonesia on Wednesday, sending people as far away as southern India scurrying from buildings and raising fears of a disastrous tsunami as in 2004.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Aceh, the Indonesian province closest to the initial earthquake. But an aftershock of almost the same magnitude, less deep that the first quake, hit soon after he finished speaking.

The first quake struck at 4.38 a.m EDT and an 8.2 magnitude aftershock just over two hours later, at 6.43 a.m. EDT. Two more strong aftershocks hit later.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued fresh tsunami warnings for the entire Indian Ocean after the aftershocks. Authorities in Indonesia said there were reports of sea-levels rising off Aceh, but by less than a metre (3.3 feet).

But authorities in India's Andaman and Nicobar islands, to the north of where the quakes struck, said waves of up to 3.9 metres (13 feet) could hit there.

Individual countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, issued their own tsunami warnings and people near the coast in six Thai provinces were ordered to move to higher ground. Authorities shut down the international airport in the Thai beach resort province of Phuket.

The quakes were about 300 miles southwest of the city of Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, the U.S. Geological survey said. The first was at a depth of 20.5 miles.

Indonesia's disaster management agency said power was down in Aceh province and people were gathering on high ground as sirens warned of the danger.

"The electricity is down, there are traffic jams to access higher ground. Sirens and Koran recitals from mosques are everywhere," said Sutopo, spokesman for the agency.

Yudhoyono, speaking after the first quake, said there were no signs of a disaster.

"There is no tsunami threat although we are on alert," said he said at a joint news conference in Jakarta with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron, who said Britain was standing ready to help if needed.

"The situation in Aceh is under control, there's a little bit of panic but people can go to higher ground," Yudhoyono said.

Warning sirens rang out across the Thai island of Phuket, a tourist hotspot that was one of the worst hit areas in the 2004 tsunami.

"Guests from expensive hotels overlooking Phuket's beaches were evacuated to the hills behind and local people were driving away in cars and on motorcycles. Everyone seemed quite calm, the warning had been issued well in advance," freelance journalist Apichai Thonoy told Reuters by telephone.

OUT ON THE STREETS

Indonesian television showed people gathering in mosques in Banda Aceh. Many others were on the streets, holding crying children.

In the city of Medan, a hospital evacuated patients, who were wheeled out on beds and in wheelchairs.

Yudhoyono said he had ordered a disaster relief team to fly to Aceh, which was devastated by the 9.1 magnitude 2004 quake, which sent huge tsunami waves crashing into Sumatra, where 170,000 people were killed, and across the Indian Ocean.

In all, the 2004 tsunami killed about 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries, including Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

Wednesday's quakes were felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and in southern India, hundreds of office workers in the city of Bangalore left their buildings while the port of Chennai closed down because of tsunami fears.
